In a small bowl, whisk all ingredients except the steak (soy sauce, whiskey, sugar, Dijon mustard and hot sauce (if desired,) until sugar dissolves.

Place flank steak in a 9 x 13-inch baking dish and pour marinade over top. Flip to make sure both sides coated. Wrap with aluminum foil and refrigerate for 1 - 12 hours (can flip meat if needed.)

When ready to cook, preheat grill to high.

Remove meat from marinade and grill for 5 minutes. Flip and cook another 3-4 minutes or until cooked to desired doneness.

Let rest 5 minutes before slicing and serving
